As long ago as 1907 Thornton-le-Dale was voted the most beautiful village in Yorkshire. There are shops inns, cafés and an Old Forge (now a gift shop and chocolate maker) all providing excuses for staying.

There are lovely walks beside the bubbling beck populated with brown trout. Follow village lanes out to Ellerburn towards Dalby Forest for a wonderful glimpse of this outstanding area.

Other features include the famous thatched cottage (left) said to be the most photographed building in England.

There is a large car park in the grounds of the Hall, a fine Tudor building, now a residential home with a bar for non residents It also has a craft shop ,set in the old stable and coach house, offering some fine items.

In the village centre you will see the 600 year old market cross and a set of stocks.

Not far away are the 12 Almshouses and the old grammar school founded by Lady Lumley in the mid 17th Century.
